This is the beauty about buying shoes – its one of the things we can purchase where we don’t have to worry if the fit is unflattering.

My wonderfully artistic and out of the box floral designer friend, Françoise Weeks has extended her talents to the world of shoes! When I first saw them, they had a turn of the 20th century feel to them. With this in mind, I designed this year’s notecard set to reflect this vintage style.

Should Art Be Practical?

Françoise Weeks was asked to present again this year at Billingsley.

While photographing her latest shoe inspired design, I overheard an attendee say to her companion “but when would you ever use this?” Does art really need a practical application?

To me, referring to Françoise’s work as merely a floral bouquet or “arrangement” is demeaning. Her work is art. It is art that inspires and it elicits an emotion – it makes me smile. I admire the detail, the intricacy and with her shoe inspired designs – I love its whimsy.

I feel her type of art is akin to the work of Cristo – installations that are unique but fleeting – much like admiring a fall sunrise, the laughter of children running through a water fountain on a hot summer day, tasting a velvety glass of Syrah or a hug from a loved one.

Her artwork is my muse.

Honored Speaker – Françoise Weeks

My good friend and fabulous floral artist, Françoise Weeks created quite the buzz at a recent floral industry conference held at the wholesale flower market on Swan Island. Françoise was one of four distinguished guest speakers invited to present and the only speaker representing the local Northwest talent. Attendees were invited to meet the guest speaker at the sponsoring wholesaler. Billingsley Wholesale Floral sponsored Françoise and was packed to the roof! The following is a collage of Françoise’s presentation show and the 10 lucky raffle winners that got to take home one of Françoise’s creations from her presentation. Practice Your Vision

I saw a piece on the National news about an ice festival in China and it inspired me to try to set up something different to showcase Françoise Weeks latest sculptures for bridal bouquets. Françoise’s vision requires a lot of technical “behind the scenes” research in terms of structure, architecture and materials to create such a one of kind design.

To create my vision of an “ice cave”, I found some plastic bags and glittering threads lying around. SB-800 speedlights were placed to reflect off the plastic bags and off to the side to light the floral design. Keeping the ISO low at 100 allowed me to achieve a dramatic look by keeping the background dark and only pick up the light from the speedlights and the lighted subject.

Collage of Favorites from Bio Photo Special

This event was filled with lots of fun and great positive energy in working with all the beautiful ladies that participated in my Bio Photo Special shoot on September 9th.
